Move along, nothing to see here.

"Perhaps Lance Thomas just found $30,000 cash laying on the ground.
Maybe by the concession stand at Cameron Indoor.

But short of that -- or something equally hard to imagine, like a
lottery win or an unknown inheritance -- it's difficult to come up
with a way that the former Duke standout could've made a $30,000 down
payment to a New York jewelery store during his senior year that won't
place the Blue Devils' national championship from that season in
jeopardy. Put simply, this looks bad and could be really, really bad
for one of America's most celebrated programs."

I dunno....there are a lot of fans from schools which've been burned
who might keep this in the spotlight

# There is very little benefit to having a starting
# forward blanketing himself in jewelry and winding up
# embroiled in a lawsuit. The diamonds didn't draw Thomas
# to Duke. They didn't maintain his academic eligibility.
# They didn't make him stronger or faster.

This argument is easily refuted.

# The NCAA fears schools would use such deals as a
# recruiting advantage. A booster who runs a car
# dealership could offer what is essentially a free car
# to every player on the team and never ask for the money
# later. A clothier could offer the same. Or an apartment
# manager. Or a hotel. Or whatever. Some schools would
# enjoy a competitive advantage.

Oh, come on! That could never happen.

# Not just for Duke, but for the NCAA, which, for
# decades, has been criticized for supposedly enforcing
# its rules differently against different programs.

And a fat lot of good the criticism has done.

The NCAA will vacate the wins from that season so that Koach K gets to
break the wins record again.

I hope the NCAA shows mercy.
There has to be a perfectly
good explanation.

This is bizarre. Lance Thomas was the ultimate role player,
nothing close to a star. He was a great defender, and a
decent rebounder, but that was it. He had no moves or
game on offense unless left wide open on a dish. Absolutely
no NBA potential, maybe France or something. How the
fuck could someone pay him for that?

I file this in the what the fucking fuck category. If he ends
up tarnishing the championship, well fuck him.
